PREYEN #Dewani : Is he still a person of interest in this investigation ?

DETECTIVES who suspect millionaire playboy Shrien Dewani of hiring hitmen to murder his new bride on their honeymoon want to talk to his brother.

South African police investigating the kidnapping and shooting of Anni Dewani, 28, in Cape Town last month believe Shrien’s older brother, Preyen, could have vital information.

The development comes after it emerged British detectives have been approached by a German male escort who claims Shrien, 30, paid him for gay sex on three separate occasions.

Shrien, who is fighting moves to extradite him to South Africa to be quizzed over the alleged conspiracy, has strongly denied being gay or playing any part in his wife’s murder.

A Cape Town police source said: “Preyen is not a suspect. It is more a matter of him being a person of interest given his close contact with his brother around the time of the murder.”

Yesterday a Dewani family friend told of the strong bond between the brothers, saying:

“Shrien would always turn to his big brother for advice. They are incredibly close.

“Shrien, who was quite flash and likes to party, is more flamboyant than his brother.

“Preyen is far more serious. He would always toe the line and act on their father’s instructions.

“But despite their differences, they are inseparable.”

The brothers, who share the family home in Westbury-on-Trym in Bristol, took over their dad’s business, PSP Healthcare, in 2005. It is now £6.5million in debt.

Shrien is still in the UK after being released on £250,000 bail ahead of an extradition hearing next month.

South African police want to formally question him after taxi driver Zola Tongo, 31 – who was jailed last week for 18 years for conspiring to murder Anni – told police Shrien offered to pay him £1,400 to have his wife killed.

Detectives say they have CCTV footage showing Shrien handing cash to Tongo two days after the murder.

Two other men – Xolile Mnguni, 23, and Mziwamadoda Qwabe, 25 – face charges of murder, aggravated robbery and kidnapping.

Shrien says he and Anni were taking a late-night tour of notorious Cape Town township Gugulethu when their taxi was ambushed by two gunmen.

He says the carjackers threw him and Tongo out of the cab before driving off with his wife.
Anni’s body was found in the back of the VW Sharan taxi in a neighbouring township several hours later. She had been shot in the neck.

Her dad, Vinod Hindocha, has pleaded with Shrien not to fight extradition, saying: “Let the world know what happened.”

South African police also want to question Shrien over the carjacking and murder of anti-apartheid campaigner Dr Pox Raghavjee in 2007.
