Shreni Dewani should take lie detector

If Shrien returns to South Africa and knowing the British system I cannot see this happening . The victims under British law seem to rarely have justice. The Dewanis are wealthy and in England money can buy you anything you want. Puppet Judges ,ready to bow to your bidding  if the price is right. It has become clear South Africa , inflamed by British media reporting and from the comments that should never have been made by Shriens 'hot shot' lawyer.

Here are comments and thoughts from South Africa. A lie detector seems to be the solution for some, although agreed it can only tell if you are 'deceptive' in your answers. I think Shrien has already proved deception. Maybe this is what he fears the most.  His brother Preyen , doing all the talking for him but he cannot take a lie detector on his brothers behalf and Shrien cannot 'cry' each time a question is asked as a ploy to not reply.

I am only saying Shrien should come back to be questioned in SA, why is running away from that? That to me its alone fishy. Your wife is murdered you will be the first one to come and give evidence, not to mention accompany his family. He should be sitting next to Anni's father in the court if he really felt this was all a lie. There is more to it then meets the eye. He has made us to feel suspicious, and that we are. His comments that if he comes to SA to testify, he will just cry, I then made my conclussions. Let the SA police find this guy and lock him in SA.

S Dewani must be under alot of pressure from SA harasment, may be theres political pressure like his brother Preyen says, its rather difficult to believe Shrien did this, This is just a hi jacking gone bad, ya ya shriens story doesnt add up neither does the polices in their daily activities. WHY WOULD SHRIEN MURDER HIS WIFE IT SIMPLY DEFIES LOGIC

Dewani is innocent to my view. i agree with Stela he should do a lie detector test but only to prove he is innocent

NO ONE HAS STATED ANY MOTIVE WHY SHRIEN KILLED HIS WIFE, I THINK HE IS INNOCENT.

In similar circumstances "thieves" would have to kill my husband before he left me, not so much because of his undying love for me, but because his male pride and natural protectiveness woud not allow it. Shiren's lack of any marks to indicate a scuffle took place seems odd.

Get Shrien to do the lie detector test... Why doesn't he do a live video interview so we can see his guilty face?

A further thing that has worried me is why would Shrien drive to the Strand and have dinner? Why not Camps Bay. In my opinion there is nothing nice or romantic about the Strand, it is below average. What about a wine farm, why the Strand. If the man has so much money why the Strand? You couldn't see the whole of Cape Town in just 45 minutes, why drive to Somerset West. Yes it was a beautiful night, but why not stroll down Camps Bay beach?

I now read on mail on line the first guy who Shrien spoke to after the hijacking, was a guy who was parking his car. He asked questions while alerting the police of the hijacking. Shriens first version of events is that he was KICKED out of the car. In early reports he states he was thrown from the car, pushed from the car and now dragged from the car. This chap who was the first person to see Shrien after the hijacking said he was not scuffed up but smarlty dressed and did not look like he had been in a scuffle! The plot thickens!First reports I read he was thrown/ pushed from the moving car. Now I read the car had come to a stop and now he was being dragged from the car.I further read on mail on line is the police questioned him if he knew the number plate of the hijacked car, he tried to phone overseas to get the registration of the car meaning the car had been hired by his family. The plot really does thicken!

Mr Dewani is now in a precarious position which is what my gut is telling me. If he returns to SA, he knows he runs the possibility of being found out. However if refuses to return, then he clearly has something to hide, if he is not overcome by grief. As someone previously commented, his recent rhetoric is not indicative of someone who has lost their wife, he even seems casual about the event. Whoever the culprit is, the net is closing, and faster by the day.....

I think this murder was all planned by Shrien for a big payout from the Insurance company. The insurance companies in UK should be alerted to this and police should investigate. I have never met Anni but am deeply saddened and am very upset by her murder. RIP beautiful Annie.

@4768I was born and grew up in Gugulethu.

I know for a fact that people within miles of Gugulethu know very little of Gugulethu other than what they read from the media. So, your proximity means nothing. If the police considered this a hit, they would not have released the husband. Releasing the husband and saying he is not a suspect makes it hard to believe that they consider this a hit.

What is odd, however, is the sequence of events and the running to the media by Shrien. Why hire a company that is not linked to the hotel, and use a driver who was not working for his company at the time? Surely, any tourist would be advised to listen to their hotel on matters of security.

They had supper in Somerset West, and for some reason, 30 minutes later they were hungry again and decided to check out the nightlife in Gugulethu (not Waterfront close to their hotel because it was stale and boring)Anni was not raped and this has been made clear, the car was recovered and two eyewitnesses released.

I do not have to be a criminal to see this as odd

So the driver has gone into hiding after pointing out the killers houses, a witness has said her panties were around her ankles and her dress pulled up, seems that rape was involved or at least tried and the driver was in on it, if the husband didn't order the hit, maybe a relative did as he has two partners in the failing business, who would benefit. So the husband is on his way back to identify the persons involved, all really strange. I'm still going to Cape Town for my hols In February, but might avoid Bristol!!

Here in the UK in 2006, there was a similar case in the story of Nisha Patel , a business owner and part time police woman. She was stabbed to death in her own house by an unknown intruder. Naturally the husband, who was having an affair with a prostitute at the time, ( or getting his leg over ) was pleading to the UK press in the aftermath of her death, to find her killers. What transpired in the subsequent investigation was that the husband had paid a nightclub bouncer to stab his wife so he could claim not only the life insurance on his wife, the house they lived in too. Why ? To pay off debts incurred by his struggling limousine business and to set up house with his new lover. The husband needs to be questioned, especially if the insurance company decides to pay out on her life insurance. It beggars belief the SA police let the husband go without questioning. However we must not deviate from the fact a beautiful young lady has lost her life in the most brutal of circumstances. RIP Sister.

Being a resident of SA and living in the Cape only a few kilometres from the place they found Anni's body, I can tell you that in my opinion, this probably was a car jacking gone wrong. I highly doubt this was a contrived murder. I have lived in SA all my life and these kinds of crime happen all the time here. Most of the time, murder happens buts its not planned. My take is that they high jacked the car, and threw the driver out because they really did want the car. After getting rid of the driver they realised that there were two people in the back seat. So they drove around with them wondering what to do now. They noticed the lady, decided to rape her, but needed to get rid of the husband first, hence throwing Shrien out of the car. They drove off with her and probably tried(or did in fact ) rape her. She put up a fight and they killed her. Panic ensued and they abandoned the car and the body because by now they realised that the hubby probably has called the police. In their haste they left evidence, i.e. fingerprints. I wouldnt attribute too much to this crime. The police are making it out to be a planned hit because they want to save face, and continue to make people believe that SA townships are safe. Rubbish!!. Its just another one of those common crimes that happen everyday here, only this time it happened to be a tourist on honeymoon.

Armchair detectives or not. Why come on to a comments section of a newspaper and complain when people comment? We are invited by the newspaper to comment. There is something not right. The drive back from a restaurant in Somerset-West at 10pm or 11pm and visiting Mzoli's! The comment "there is nothing I could do differently". Well you might wish you had not taken your wife to a township late at night when Mzoli's was not even open and the township was in pitch darkness. Maybe it was rank stupidity, it happens but many many people felt immediately that there was something missing from story.

Consider the facts: The vehicle was hijacked at gunpoint, only minutes after leaving a major highway, the driver kicked out (which is normal) but the back-seat occupants kidnapped (abnormal); why, what is the motive ? a) The value of the car. b) the value of the couple's possessions. c) The value of cash and goods they might have elsewhere. d) sexual assault. e) murder. f) assassination.(a b): Stealing the car and possessions did not require any further involvement from the couple.(c) Highjack victims can be taken home and tortured into opening safes etc, Since they were hotel guests this is not an option. d) Men are not entirely imune to sexual assault in these situations. e) Why stop at one death? Killers know that a dead witness can't testify.f) A pro would have torched the vehicle. Physical evidence trumps a witness statement every time.Principal motive therefore: Robbery, possibly with the collusion of the driver. The leniance shown to the husband is atypical of tik-abuse. The murder in this case was not planned but deemed essential once the sexual assault became the secondary motivation.A hit could only be considered if the husband stood to gain financially from his wife's death.

There is no doubt in my mind that Shrien organised a hit on his wife. my condolences to her family. My husband was murdered and they dumped his body and took the car. Shrien took advantage of the fact that South Africa is a haven for criminals, and we have corrupt policemen and put his plan into action thinking he can get way with his crime. I hope he feels the fullest strenght of the law as he has further tarnished the image of South Africa.

If there is a payout due as a result of the wife's murder through an insurance payout then the british police will be first to investigate the husbands family if the insurance company doesn't do it first.Expecting the south african police to find anything is a far fetched dream as the country has been allowed to slip into a crap hole with the authorities being able to do NOTHING. Life seems to be cheap in S.A as is the case with the rest of Africa.Expecting to find logic in a murder when so many murders take place in south africa would be quite funny had the story not been so tragic. The real story could be as simple as them taking her with the intention to rape her as they do so many women in South Africa, she puts up a fight and they decide to kill her and run. Can't do much with a car that has a victims blood all over it, they shot her in the neck so you can imagine how much blood there would have been.

Some facts for the armchair detectives : A lot probably does not make sense as you are making the mistake of trying to find logic and reason in the criminals actions. In South Africa in Gugulethu and other areas there is a lot of "tik" - it is an amphetamine drug that makes people high, wired, twitchy, impulsive, mad really. So dont look for them to be acting with any sense. Give the husband a break until there is more proof. Compare this case with the Brett Goldin / Richard Bloom murder here a few years ago and you might see some similarities.

I can never agree with you more. To me it really does not make any sense why the driver did not make any report to the police. Also not everything goes by the book and if the murderer may be novice who never did this sort of thing before but in panic they could have done it or their motive might have been different but could not succeed ie rape !!! Surely the is more to come. My take is that the primary motive may have been robbery, but as it is the case these days, If you are a woman, you are not fully robbed until you are raped or at least threatened with rape in the process. It is one of their criminals scariest weapons, but once used, there is now greater need to eliminate the victim. This may have been the case especially given the fact that she would unlikely have been a cooperating victim. As for dumping the car, this may have been triggerd by fear that they had to get ou of the sceane immediately, suspicios/ or tipped off that they are being followed or time . the biggest suspect is the driver, who I think may be part of the gang.
